Phillip and I both grew up in the country, on the land. Before purchasing Heifer Station in 2009 we both spent in excess of 25 years in the corporate world. With five adult children who had left the nest we decided we would like to retire to the land and grow fat cattle.
Then Heifer Station came on the market, a property, as a real estate agent Phillip had admired for years. The vineyard barely visible through the blackberries, we purchased the property to pursue our dream, which did not include becoming vignerons. Planning to push the vines out, locals constantly congratulated us on the purchase of a magnificent vineyard, positioned on red loam soils over limestone, rising to an altitude of 900M, in a wine region where altitude is everything.
After much contemplation we both agreed to give the vineyard a chance to enjoy the potential it deserved. Five children – imagine the free labour!! Not a chance, all are academics who enjoy the fruits of our labour.
Our hard work over the past seven years has seen the vineyard flourish and it wasn’t long before the recognition followed -culminating in double gold medals at Orange and Royal Easter for our Shiraz. With the vineyard ticking along nicely, it was time for our business to expand, and in 2016 we opened our stunning cellar door in the old woolshed. Since then we haven’t stopped! Life is great and the wine industry, with all of its challenges, has been an amazing journey. With a great little team around us, we are preparing for an even brighter future.
